Updated: Oct 15, 2024

The members of Group 2 will analyze Darhata Sawabi's textiles through connecting her works to the lessons learned from the subject 'Art Application'.

Pis Syabit (Headcloth)

The primary textile Darhata Sawabi was famous for weaving. Pis syabit is a square-shaped textile that features intricate geometric patterns, often in vibrant colors like red, black, and orange.

Pis syabit is an applied art that is traditionally worn by Tausug men and women for ceremonial or everyday use. It elevates one's visual appeal which adds elegance, charm, and practicality. Clothing is one of the most essential subjects to one's everyday life and captivates society with its design and creativity.

Geometric Motifs

Sawabi’s works are known for their complex geometric patterns, often consisting of symmetrical designs that reflect the Tausug people’s deep connection with nature, spirituality, and cultural identity.

Elements such as lines, shapes, space, and form are heavily used in their Geometric Motifs. through using geometry, weavers can create intricate designs and patterns that have a deep connection with the people of Tausug-Parang Jolo. While it does not look like a traditional line it creates a contrast between the shapes and colors. Many of its shapes help create an image of a pattern or an object. Its space helps the design through overlapping, size, and placement to achieve balance and propionate with each other.

Bold Color Combinations

Sawabi’s textiles often feature bold, contrasting colors, which represent various cultural and natural elements important to the Tausug people.

By combining Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary colors weavers can showcase their culture and the natural local components. Through using an array of bold colors we are able to differentiate between different shapes. It especially help with contrast and emphasize of the textile.

Symbolism

Many of Sawabi’s textiles carry symbolic meaning, with designs that reflect Tausug's beliefs, such as protection, prosperity, and community. These are the key parts of her work’s story.

This element brings meaning and a message to the work. It adds value to the pieces that were weaved by the artist. Art is something that brings people together because its meaning and symbolism can “speak” to them because it is relatable to them, similar to how Sawabi’s works can make the Tausug people feel.

Traditional Techniques

Sawabi’s traditional backstrap loom weaving techniques that is being passed down through generations, helped preserve the Tausug weaving heritage.

Aside from symbolism that can add metaphorical value to a piece, the rich history that is tied to the process of the artwork adds value to the art as well. The traditional weaving techniques applied by Sawabi are significant in both creating beautiful art and preserving a portion of the Tausug culture.
